Upcoming SHL Event:

SHL Book Group: Sex and the Constitution

July 23, 2017 4:00 pm

Barnes & Noble
1812 Sam Rittenberg Blvd
Charleston, SC

After careful consideration, we are changing our July selection to Sex and the Constitution: Sex, Religion and Law from America's Origins to the Twenty-First Century by Geoffrey R. Stone (2017, 538 pages). "Magnificent and monumental-a stunning blend of dispassionate analysis and deep moral conviction. Think that the United States was born as a Christian nation? Think again." (Cass R. Sunstein, Robert Walmsley University Professor, Harvard University) HC $22.48, Kindle $16.05, Audible $26.94 or 1 credit.

Sharon says: Herb and I read the (sample) first chapter and found it fascinating. Though the book is somewhat long, the author writes clearly and includes many stories. One reviewer called it a "page turner." You can watch the author, who is an articulate, interesting attorney, discuss the book at Since we don't have a book already selected for August, it would be possible to extend our discussion of this book for a second month if we are that enamoured with it. Please note that it is not a strict rule that you have read the book by the time of the club meeting. We find that those who have not read the material before hand can contribute interesting insights to the topic and then are compelled to do further reading. Always a good thing.

RSVP requested via on Facebook or Meetup where we have a list of books we are considering for future book club meetings. At our monthly meetings we then vote on which books from this list are to be read when. And we strongly urge each of you to make suggestions for books that you feel would be appropriate for our book club. Click here to see our current book list.
